Interior Painting - Flashing Problems

I had a fellow painter e-mail me the other day with an interior painting problem.

He wrote:
Hi Lee,
I was wondering if you could help me with a simple issue? Every time I do spackling on small holes and I paint over it with eggshell or any kind of sheen paint , the paint is always a different sheen in the area where I spackled. Even when I use primer it happens. What can I do to make it so that there are no sheen differences in the final coat of paint? Thank you.

I wrote back:
Hi Vince,
Yeah, they call that "flashing". That is exactly why I don't use spackle anymore. I use drywall compound in the powder form that I can mix right on the job. It won't flash and you can go over it with just paint when dry.
