How To Paint a Room
Hi Stewart,
O.K., I see what you're saying. What I mean here is that everything is primed up. The ceiling is done 2 coats and the walls are rolled out and all that is left is to cut the ceiling line in 2 coats and then roll out the walls the final coat.
You have cut in and rolled out the ceiling twice, you have rolled out the walls, cut them in twice and all that is left is to cut in around the top of the wall at the ceiling line and then roll out the final coat of paint and you're done.
The first coat on the walls is a primer coat, but it can be regular paint or primer. I just call the first coat the primer coat.
Here's one for using primer as a first coat: The older painters used to use a latex primer to seal the ceiling and the walls and then finish with a flat oil-base paint on the ceiling and walls. (White oil-based flat finish on the ceiling and a color flat finish oil-base on the walls).
Benjamin Moore has a flat oil-based paint called "Sani-Flat". It may be discontinued now as the government V.O.C. restrictions are phasing out oil-based products.
This is where ceramic flat wall paint replaces oil-based flat for it's washability. Sherwin Williams has a product called "Duration™ Home".
(The flat oil-based paints dry in a couple of hours. As a matter of fact, flat oil-based wall paints dry faster than oil-based enamals do.)
The latex primer would act like a sealed rubber matt that would make the oil-base lay flat and dry uniform and even, not being able to soak in to the wall unevenly.
