Doing Re-paints Has Changed a Bit Over Time

Painting interior in people's homes has changed quite a bit in the last 15 years since I first started painting.

The government cracked down on V.O.C.s (volatile organic compounds) and as warned by the experts, "stay with latex paints because oil base paints are gradually being phased out".

It's true. We used to paint quite a bit of woodwork using Benjamin Moore's "Satin Impervo" in the early days of our business. Now days, there just isn't a quality oil base product around except maybe Sherwin William’s Pro Classic line, which is still pretty good.

The new latex paints that are on the market are pretty good though as long as you stay with the highest quality. One of the leading ceramic paints made by Graham are best. If you use a sprayer you can get great results spraying doors using the new satin sheen ceramic paint I hear.

I like Graham's ceramic flat for front entryways. Many latex paints leave roller streaks on tall walls. That's another area that the old oil-base flat wall paint was good for. It hid imperfections and didn't leave roller streaks, and it was super washable.

Today, in many of the expensive homes latex paint is used on the woodwork and trim. There's an art to putting it on right. Outside it doesn't matter much because you should always use latex paints for exterior work.

If you do use oil-base primer and paint for the woodwork, doors and trim, you may have to add some thinner or Penetrol to your paint to get it to spread right. With the old formula for Benjamin Moore's Satin Impervo, you could brush it on almost any old way and it would level out and look good. I guess those days are gone for good.
