How To Instantly Look Professional
There is an old Chinese proverb that says “A man without a smiling face should not open shop”. What a wise saying! I hate being around bummed out people, don’t you?
Do you resent it if you have to deal with someone that looks like they are not happy? I sure do. My family and I always like to go out to eat on Sundays. We usually went to the Bamboo House, an all-you-can-eat type of place that serves great Chinese food.
I remember one Sunday trying out a Chinese restaurant across town. We had recently moved across town and we were trying out new places to eat. We went to one place that was really busy but I decided not to stay because the counter person had no smile and the waitress wasn’t much friendlier, so I just said to my wife, come on, let’s go somewhere else.
We then went to another smaller, quieter Chinese buffet restaurant that had just opened and it was the same creepy reception. Although we did stay and eat, I didn’t like the place. Not only did they not have a smile, the food trays were only half full like they were cutting back. I felt guilty if I took too much. I felt like I might eat them out of business.
The Bamboo house across town that we always went to not only had the best food in town but they were really nice people. Friendly to be around and courteous. Once when we went to the Bamboo House during the week, I loaded up my plate so I only had to make one trip and the waitress, a young gal said “boy, you sure eat a lot”. But she said it with a smile on her face. I believe you can get away with saying just about anything when you say it with a smile.
I just think that a smile is professional. As long as it is not phony. People hate phoniness. We should try to bring people into a positive environment when they enter our place of business.
Even if you are a writer, you should try to be upbeat and friendly. I believe it shows through even if you are a column or article writer. To me, a smile represents professionalism. It says that you know what you are doing. You are well-adjusted, successful and most importantly that you like people – especially the ones that you deal with in business – your customers!
People with no smile or enthusiasm make a statement that they are not doing well or that their business is in trouble. I don’t mean we have to go around trying to be some kind of nice nut or something phony, but if we enjoy what we do, and sincerely like our customers, we can’t go wrong.
I think a lot of people are afraid of being in business. Listen, you cannot fail if you are diligent in your business. Maybe you have a business that is a high financial risk, I don’t know. But if you have a service-type business that just requires that you build a good customer base, the best key to your success besides doing good work is a positive, cheerful attitude that produces a pleasant smile and a positive atmosphere.
Jerry Seinfeld once told how his dad was a sign painter for a living. He went around with his dad on occasions and noticed that as his dad would meet with his clients that he would tell them a joke and get them laughing. Then he would walk away with more business.
His dad, whether intentionally or just by nature had the secret to success. When you create a positive environment around people, they buy! This is what motivated Jerry Seinfeld go on to become a professional comedian.
