HOW TO BID PAINT JOBS
When I bid on doing exterior jobs, I like to look over the entire house first. Usually the front of the house is going to take the longest amount of time to prep and to paint and usually has the most detail.
If the front of the house will take you a couple weeks to paint, the back side will probably take about a week half to complete. And let us say that each side will take about a week to prep and to paint.
You have to look at things like the windows. Are they older windows that need new glazing? Are there wooden storms to paint? Or are they wooden windows that don’t need any caulk? Do they have aluminum storm frames that need to come down? Or the windows all maintenance free vinyl windows?
Is the house rough siding? Are you going to wash the house first? Are you planning on using two solid coats of paint? Is it an older house that’s flaking and peeling that you’re gonna have to do a lot of prep work first before you can paint? See these are all things we have to take in consideration when we’re going to paint the exterior.
How about estimating how many gallons of paint? Times 2 coats even!
Are you gonna be doing interior painting?
If it’s a bedroom how long will it take to do just walls and ceilings? How about the woodwork? Did you know that it takes you a day and a half to paint the walls and ceiling and that it will take another day and a half to do the woodwork? (Usually the woodwork is the other half of the job).
Kitchens are quite different than estimating a bedroom. For instance, how long does it take to paint cupboards? Is the paint sound? Or are you going to have to remove all the unsound paint first?
It takes time to learn how long it takes to complete certain jobs. Painting bedrooms or living rooms, dining rooms etc. will probably be the easiest projects for you to get used to bidding first. You will probably under bid on some projects in the beginning (like kitchens and even some exterior work).
I lost my shirt one of my exterior jobs and even a few interior jobs I have bid on from time to time. It would have been a lot easier if I had some kind of comparison to go by. After 13 years of successful painting, I have written a book called How to Paint Like A Pro and it describes all the different types of painting jobs you will probably bid on.
Things like painting or staining woodwork, prep work before painting a room, kitchen cupboards, ceilings, walls, etc. Also, how to bid on exterior paint jobs. I give my best painting advice to help you do professional work. This book also shows how to get it free jobs and how to bid on all your paint jobs.
