About Part-Time Business Reports
These reports were designed to give you an overall understanding of a given business. As you may be considering different business ventures at this time these reports will enable you to "take a look" at a business and on a preliminary basis decide if the business may be suitable for you.
Once you decide that a business may be of interest to you it would be an excellent idea to do additional research. In most areas you will be able to obtain a lot of important information through trade magazines and publications available in larger Public Libraries. Most universities also offer night time and day time adult education in general business management as well as management courses in specific industries.
Estimates as shown under above "Vital Information" covers only the beginning years of the business when it most typically operates with only 1 or 2 employees. As the business matures the above figures would become substantially higher. It is assumed when calculating start-up expenses that basic office supplies and equipment (such as typewriter or computer, filing cabinet, desk, and miscellaneous supplies are available).
Our research was based on the latest industry and government publications.
Description of Business
Approximately 35% of all painting done is residential, about 50% is commercial, and the remaining 1 5% is industrial. Painting is done both on interior and exterior surfaces. Depending on climate conditions surfaces areas of most outside structures need to be painted about every 4-6 years. Inside areas need to be painted more often, but this will largely depend on usage of a structure.
A majority of residential painting is done by small contractors. Many of them are owner operated. Much of the commercial and industrial painting, especially larger facilities such as high-rise buildings, warehouses and factories, are painted by larger painting contractors.
Residential painting lends itself extremely well to a part-time business venture. Weekends and evening hours are good times to paint both the inside and outside of houses and apartments. The business can be started and developed on a part-time basis and as revenue grows turned into a full-time venture.
The residential painting market has been especially strong in recent years. A big reason for this is that since new houses are becoming ever more expensive, home owners stay longer in existing homes and spend more money for upkeep.
Another excellent market is the interior painting of apartment buildings. When apartments are vacated and before new tenants move in, these apartments are professionally cleaned and re-painted. Professional Apartment Management companies will generally prefer to utilize outside companies for this service.
See report # 120 1 n Apartment/Single Family Preparation Services. The painting business and the Apartment/Single Family Preparation Service" businesses lend themselves well to partnering and cross marketing efforts. As a business grows it can also offer both of these services. Another business that fits well with painting and preparation services is the carpet cleaning business (see report # 1204 "Carpet Cleaning").
Marketing Your Services
Every home owner (do not forget owners of condominiums and townhouses) and small business owner is a potential customer. Since this market is so large, it would probably be best if you concentrated on a specific area, especially if you live in a large city. This will cut your travel time substantially.
If you are targeting the home owner, your service is best marketed via direct mail, small display ads, and leaving flyers in mail boxes and on door knobs. On outside painting jobs you have the additional advantage of targeting homes which are in need of painting. In as much as time allows you should also make personal sales calls. Talking to a home owner and prospective customer in person and leaving some sales material will be highly effective.
If your primary customers are small businesses, such as store owners the above marketing techniques will work well also.
An attractive direct mail piece consists of a small brochure (4 pages is sufficient), or even one or more individual flyers accompanied by a sales letter. Any local printer or copying center can assist you with the professional graphic design of such as mailing brochure or flyer.
You can purchase residential mailing lists from local mailing list companies (see Yellow Pages under mailing list companies). You can specify demographics on a residential list such as age, income and area. In this way you can target an upper income area.
Mailing lists of individuals who have recently bought a home (excluding new homes) are especially good candidates. Also real estate agents can generate a lot of painting business since homes are often completely painted before they are put up for sale.
Advertising in weekly neighborhood papers would also be cost effective. These publications generally carry a "Services to the Home" or "Business Service section". Repetitive advertising can be highly effective.
As individuals and business owners and operators see your advertising on different occasions they will be more likely to trust your company. Once you get established, buy an advertisement In the Yellow Pages, even If it is only a small one.
How Much to Charge
How much you can charge will depend on various factors. The primary ones are as follows:
1. Your competition comes first and foremost. The market always decides price. This will take some snooping on your part. It is generally best not to be among the most expensive nor the cheapest, but to position yourself somewhat in the middle. While both businesses and individuals will shop for price many will not buy the least expensive service because it may be perceived to be inferior.
2. The size of the area to be painted. You will need to charge extra for damaged areas since you will be spending additional time on this.
3. You should also establish a rate based on:
Your overhead expenses. These are all expenses you incur on behalf of the business which should include both supplies (the quality of the paint used will also influence the cost of the project), and administrative expenses, automobile expenses, advertising and promotion and lastly and most importantly, your time and effort. This will be the biggest expenses you have since you are selling a service and specifically your own time so don't sell yourself short.
The Operation of the Business
Storage: A good storage area is important in the painting business. Left-over paint should be properly marked so you will know the exact color for future use. Proper shelving is also required for rollers and brushes. The storage area should be well ventilated and have a cement floor. A fire extinguisher should be kept in the storage area. Supplies should be protected from direct sunlight.
Company vehicle: Unless you currently own a truck or a van, you will need to acquire one. It is not feasible to transport your supplies and equipment in a passenger vehicle. You should consider both the buying and leasing options. A used vehicle is also a viable option.
Obtain a vehicle that has a good appearance, since it will present an image of your business as you call on individuals and businesses to give them an estimate on work to be performed. Advertising your business with a professionally painted sign on the vehicle is relatively inexpensive and effective advertising.
Supplies: Most of the supplies needed in your painting business are fairly inexpensive. They consist of the following:
Brushes
Rollers
Pegboard
Drop Cloths
Working Clothes
Respirator type masks
Ladders
Miscellaneous supplies
Equipment: The following equipment is required for your business:
Equipment:
Cost (approximate):
Gas or electric pump Paint sprayers (both airless and standard) 800.00 - 1500.00
Painting:
Painting skills can be learned with relative ease. You will be using various equipment in your work. Nylon brushes are most effective for use. Proper usage of sprayers can cut the time to cover a wall by a substantial amount.
Your local painting supplier will be able to advise you on the types of paints and primers which are requires for different types of jobs, both inside and outside You should wear a protective mask when you work with spray equipment.
Administration:
Your administration tasks should be pretty small while you operate a business without employees. A computer would be advantageous. It would enable you to prepare bids, invoices (for established business accounts only), correspondence, keeping a customer list and possibly preparing some flyers. While you certainly can do these tasks without a computer it would take much more time.
Where to go from here
If this business is of serious interest to you based on the above information as well as other information you may have obtained you should now do your own research before making any financial commitments. If you have some background in this field or a related field you will, of course, be much better prepared than someone who is totally inexperienced.
One of the very best but least often followed route in preparing oneself to start a new business is to enter that business as an employee for a limited period of time. This opportunity may not be available in every situation but when it is it will put you far ahead of those who have only done academic research.
